Communicate, Configure, Manage

The Intermec® 6920 Communication Server is an interactive store and forward communications software package to manage the exchange of data between mobile computers and a server host. The 6920 Server also provides device configuration and software management capabilities that allow you to control the software on your population of mobile computers. It is the easy migration path for previous generations of mobile communications systems. The client/server-based system provides flexible host-to-mobile device connectivity. The 6920 Communication Server provides mobile client support for devices running Pocket PC, Windows® CE, Windows® 9X, MS-DOS®, and PL/N operating systems.

A Path to the Future, Bringing the Past Forward

The 6920 Communication Server gives you access to TCP/IP, PPP, and Ethernet connectivity along with the support for protocols provided by previous generations of Intermec systems. Multi-tiered networks may be pulled together through generations of network controllers and network managers supported by the 6920 Communication Server. It improves the performance of installed systems and provides a gateway to new network components and options.

Benefits of the 6920 over previous generations of products include faster communication times, to reduce recurring telecommunication costs, support for IP networks to reduce the cost and complexity of supporting mobile computers, and multi-generation support for migration to new platforms like TCP/IP and Pocket PC.

Flexible Host and Remote Connectivity Options

The 32-bit Windows operating systems including NT and 2000 provide open connectivity platforms and the multiple networking options enterprises require. The 6920 offers flexibility to run installed mobile applications and add new applications and protocols. Communication client software for Pocket PC, Windows CE 3.0 and 2.0, Microsoft® Windows® 3.1, MS-DOS, and interpreted languages such as PL/N are available. Wire-based and dialup network transports are supported using industry standard TCP/IP and PPP protocols simultaneously with Intermec NPCP protocol over RS-232/RS-485 and TTY protocol over dialup connections.

Easy to Install and Configure Graphic User Interface

The Intermec 6920 Communications Server uses Microsoft's standard Windows views, structure, and formats. The GUI provides a familiar environment that allows new users to sit down and quickly become productive. Views can be customized to show the information necessary to manage and operate your system.

Mobile System Management

Data file interchange, application version control, and system software management are all functions which have been carried forward through three generations of products and improved upon in the 6920 Communication Server. These necessary functions allow the system administrator to manage the upload and download of files to remote and mobile computers. The 6920 Server allows you to take a new mobile computer out of the box, do remote or initial software loads, and automatically load all the application software necessary to turn the computer into a useful tool. Applications and firmware flash are version checked and updated on each individual client as they communicate with the server. Optional application communications session passwords are available to unobtrusively provide your enterprise the level of security you desire. Since the functions span generations of mobile computers, no one is abandoned. The 6920 system provides management and communications in one easy to use package.

System Administration

The 6920 Communications Server expands upon the administration capabilities enjoyed by previous generations of communications products. The system logs are available in ODBC format allowing use by other programs. Critical events are moved directly to the NT System Log. Standard NT management programs and tools allow that information to be used for paging and notification of administrators in the case of critical system problems.

Installation and Configuration

The installation kit including CD-ROM, diskette, and Quick Start Card will ease you through the installation and registration of your server. All system documentation and technical references are provided on the CD-ROM.

Support, Maintenance, and Training

The 6920 Communications Server software maintenance program allows each installation to receive phone support and system upgrades as they become available at no additional charge.

The registration process will allow each installation to be notified for new releases. Generic and custom training courses are available to give system administrators and engineers the skills necessary to support remote and mobile systems. System design, network validation, and on-site support and other services are available from highly experienced system engineering professionals to ensure a smooth and successful implementation.
