Intermec RFID reduces cost and improves accuracy for vehicle access control at Bob Jones University4th December 2007 Reading, United Kingdom
Bob Jones University has installed passive UHF RFID technology from Intermec (NYSE: IN) to authenticate and control access to its main campus in Greenville, S.C.
BJU’s system, consisting of Intermec IF4 RFID readers with antennas embedded in brick pillars at the main entrance and exit of the campus and Intermec IT32A Gen 2 identification tags placed on windshields, allows administrators at Bob Jones University to automate the verification of some 2,900 faculty, staff, and students who enter and exit the campus on a regular basis. The Intermec mobile computer with IP4 handheld readers is used to commission tags and for Campus Police remote verification.
“When looking for an appropriate RFID solution for vehicle access control here at the campus, we knew we needed to improve on the hit rate of our legacy, active RFID system and reduce tag cost to make it successful,” said Bob Jones University Chief Operating Officer Alan Carper. “With Intermec, we were able to do both. Intermec read ranges were double that of competing RFID vendors and improved our read hit rate from an existing 20% to close to 100%. We also purchased and installed the entire Intermec RFID system for less than it would have cost to pay the recurring cost on our legacy system. To us, that definitely equals success.”
Customization was critical for the team at Bob Jones University. They needed a vendor that would conform to their specific access control needs, including the need for read distances up to 35 feet. Additionally, they were looking for improved successful read rates of the vehicle windshield tags as they passed by the RFID readers.
“Intermec was able to quickly and efficiently improve read ranges to an average 25 feet with their on-site engineering capabilities,” said Bob Jones University Manager of IT Telecommunications Paul Litzenberger. “Having their engineering team available during installation also allowed us to customize tags for different vehicle form factors that our previous system was unable to accommodate. These two elements increased our read rate to almost 100 percent.”
The installation was completed in partnership with Regan Incorporated. Intermec offers a complete RFID product suite including readers, printers, tags, labels and inlays supported by RFID implementation services to guarantee system performance, all from a single source. Designed for global use, Intermec supports EPC Gen 2, and ISO 180006b and 6c standards and meets ETSI and FCC RF certifications.
